About Us

Welcome to the Amazon Dams Program blog! 

We are an international network of Brazilian and American professors, students and collaborators with the overall objective of synthesizing, discovering, and sharing interdisciplinary (within science) and transdisciplinary (between science and society) knowledge on the direct and indirect effects of hydroelectric dam implementation in the Amazon. Our goal is to provide research, learning, and training opportunities related to this subject matter.

The Amazon Dams Program builds on over thirty years of experience by the University of Florida’s Center for Latin American Studies and Tropical Conservation and Development Program (TCD) in research and collaboration in the Amazon region. This program focuses on the effects of dams on hydrology, land-use/land-cover change, and social-ecological transformations in three major Amazonian watersheds: the Tocantins, the Madeira, and the Tapajós.

In the US, we collaborate with the U.S. Geological Survey's Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC). The center is the science provider for the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program. In this role, the research center provides the public and decision makers with relevant scientific information about the status and trends of natural, cultural, and recreational resources found in those portions of Grand Canyon National Park and Recreation Area affected by the Dam’s operations.

This blog will serve as our virtual coffeehouse – a place to share and discuss significant or interesting tidbits of information related to hydroelectric dam development, mitigation and monitoring in the Amazonian region. We invite all to follow our postings and leave comments!

Bem-vindo ao blog do Programa Barragens na Amazônia!

Somos uma rede internacional de professores, alunos e colaboradores brasileiros e norte-americanos com o objetivo geral desintetizar, desenvolver e compartilhar conhecimento interdisciplinar (acadêmico) e transdisciplinar (entre ciência e sociedade) sobre os efeitos diretos e indiretos da implementação de barragens hidrelétricas na Amazônia. Nosso objetivo é proporcionar oportunidades de coordenação de pesquisas, ensino e treinamento relacionadas a este assunto.

O Programa de Barragens Amazônicas baseia-se no Centro de Estudos Latino-Americanos e faz parte do Programa de Conservação e Desenvolvimento Tropical (TCD) na Universidade da Flórida, que tem mais de 30 anos de experiência em pesquisa e colaboração na região amazônica. Este programa vai centrar a investigação sobre os efeitos das barragens na hidrologia, mudanças de uso e cobertura da terra e transformações socioambientais em três grandes bacias hidrográficas da Amazônia: Tocantins, Madeira e Tapajós.

Este blog vai servir como o nosso café virtual - um lugar para compartilhar e discutir quaisquer “petiscos” de informação importante ou interessante relacionada ao desenvolvimento, mitigação e monitoramento de barragens hidrelétricas da região amazônica.
